Jarrah Residence

Located on a steep hill, this former two-story Craftsman-style house needed to be extended up, down, and out to fit the homeowner’s growing family. A rear addition was added at the two existing floors, basement deepened, and the whole thing capped by a new third floor addition. The interior and exterior were fully redone with new materials and finishes throughout.

The original house was too cramped, and suffered from a lack of natural light. In addition, the potential of the hillside site was unfulfilled, as the existing two-story house wasn’t tall enough to take advantage of the incredible views overlooking the city.

To organize the all-new floor plan, a central four-story staircase was added. Capped by a massive skylight, the stairwell allows natural light to penetrate throughout the interior at all levels. At the top, the new third floor serves as a spacious Master Suite, giving the owners a luxurious new private perch and views of San Francisco.

New windows and bi-folding doors at the front and back of the house continue the theme of natural light, and foster an inside/outside connection previously lacking.  Extending this new connection to the site, separate roof decks were added on the 1st and 3rd floors.  The basement floor slab was lowered in order to gain additional head height, and now serves as a fun family media and music room.

On the exterior, new integrally-colored stucco and metal cladding give the house a clean new silhouette, and subtle details like the projected window 'frames' and wood siding accents add an elevated fit and finish.  Now almost fully remade from the original, the house makes a striking presence on it's old block.
